2. Installation

2.1. How to get "Horsepower Lab 1D"

An archive file containing the installer program can be downloaded from the web site www.horsepowerlab.com. Detailed instructions on user registration are placed there too.
In case of any problem with downloading, installation and registration please ask for help by e-mail: hpl1d@horsepowerlab.com.

2.2. System Requirements

To use "Horsepower Lab 1D" package you need a PC with Pentium-compatible processor and MS Windows 95 (or later) operation system installed. It is being tested on PCs running Windows 98, Windows XP Home and Windows 2000 and, generally, contains nothing that may prevent its normal operation under any flavor of Win32 platform.
Minimal hardware requirements are rather modest -- programs will happily run on any PC with Pentium-compatible CPU and 32 MB of RAM. However, having in mind extensive computations -- more computational power is better. Enormous amount of RAM is not a requirement, typically it will use not more than 4 MB of core memory. The uncompressed package needs about 4.3 MB of disk space on FAT32.
As its prj\ subdirectory gets filled with uncleaned projects, disk usage grows.

2.3. Installation

"Horsepower Lab 1D" distribution zipped archive file (named like hpl1d.098-20070501.zip) contains four files:       To install the program, unzip this archive, read license.txt carefully, then run the installer -- setup.exe.
It will prompt you to choose program components to install, and then to choose the installation directory:

setup.exe: 1st page

setup.exe: 2nd page

As it can be seen, installation of all program components is required, but installation of national language support (translation filea) and also creation Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts are optional. Decision to allow to create shortcuts (icons) makes running "Horsepower Lab 1D" GUI program (hpl1dw.exe) much easier itself.
The setup.exe installer self-extracts files and directories and places them under the installation directory you choose. No files or DLLs are placed outside that directory and no Registry entries are created by the installer.
After successful running the setup.exe the "Horsepower Lab 1D" is installed on your machine.

Running hpl1dw.exe for the first time creates an entry in Registry (found at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> SOFTWARE -> HorsepowerLab -> HorsepowerLab1D-1.0"). This will be the place for hpl1d programs to store their preferences and the registration key as well. However it is strongly recommended for the registered user to have a backup copy of the registration key elsewhere.

For detailed instructions on work with the package please see User Manual.

2.4. UnInstallation

Automated un-installation of "Horsepower Lab 1D" is done by running uninstall.exe. This utility is placed to the package's directory by the installation program setup.exe. uninstall.exe can be started either directly or by choosing menu shortcut Programs->Horsepower Lab 1D->uninstall from Windows system menu Start.
uninstall.exe brings up a window to get user's confirmation; by pressing Uninstall button the user permits it to remove all directories and files that have been installed. However, if the installation directory (c:\Program Files\hpl1d.098, by default) contain, e. g. some projects created by the user, it will preserve that directories and files -- and the installation directory itself -- from being removed.

2.5. Upgrade

To upgrade to the newer version of "Horsepower Lab 1D" (it is still safer to backup project directories first), there's no need to uninstall its older version, just choose some other installation directory. After this, move or copy those saved project directories to prj\ subdirectory in the newly installed version's root directory.
It is planned that XML export/import format for input data will be introduced in next version(s) to ensure backward compatibility of the project data files.

To completely remove the "Horsepower Lab 1D" from the computer, one should (in addition to running uninstall.exe) remove its key in Windows Registry. This is true for the current version in which uninstall.exe takes no care of it. So, to be sure to have every byte of the hpl1d distribution removed, delete also the following Registry entry (key): "HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> SOFTWARE -> HorsepowerLab -> HorsepowerLab1D-1.0", using e. g. regedit.exe utility. But please be forewarned that the registration key, which is stored there, will be deleted as well.
